How to set up your holiday photoshoot for success in 2021

How to set up your holiday photoshoot for success in 2021

From Halloween to Black Friday, Christmas, New Year, and Valentine’s day, holidays are a great chance to take advantage of the shopping craze and sell your products. As you already know, quality product photography is essential for showcasing your products and making them appealing to potential customers.

With Christmas just around the corner, we decided to put together a list of how to set up your holiday photoshoot for success in 2021.

Plan your holiday campaigns (way) ahead

When you want to launch a special Christmas marketing campaign, there is no time to waste. So you need to plan ahead and make sure you have enough time to contract a photo studio, research holiday campaign themes and organize your holiday photoshoot.

Set up a timeline and make sure you have everything ready at least one month before the actual holiday. As a general rule, product photography should be prepared at least three months before the campaign launch date.

Preparation is key to success

Think about it this way: the more you have figured out before the holiday shooting, the less stress you will experience. Clarify your objectives and vision with the photographer or photo studio and create mood boards with inspirational images. The more visual aid you have ready, the easier it will be for your photography and image editing team to understand your expectations.

Capture magic and emotion in your holiday photoshoot

‘Tis the season to be jolly! Capturing emotions in your product photography will spark interest in your customers. The more authentic and relatable your product images will be, the better. Remember that the holidays are a time when many brands fight to gain customers’ attention, so your holiday campaign images should stand out and surprise or offer a different perspective.

Anticipate location-related challenges

Let’s say you’re shooting on location. Whether you’re shooting in a photo studio, a restaurant, a mall, or some other place, you’ll need to consider decor. While some elements are easy to remove, others can be more difficult to move. Always visit your location and assess everything from decor to people coming in and out before the shooting day. Consider anything that might become a potential problem during the holiday shooting and avoid crises that might interfere with your planning.

Work with nature in creating out-of-the-box product photography

If you want to take product photography outside of the studio, nature will offer many creative opportunities. For those lucky to have snow during the winter, the season is a unique and fantastic opportunity to spice up images and enrich the holiday photoshoot.

Snow, ice, frost, and mist are all-natural elements that can help you get remarkable holiday images.

Play with natural light

Natural light has the power to make most products look incredible. So, if you’re not looking for a standard white background approach for your product photography, give natural light a try. You can use a room with big windows or just go right outside in direct sunlight. Always remember to check the weather, so your pictures won’t come out too gloomy.

Experiment with various times of the day, and keep in mind that the light can change drastically from one hour to the next during the winter, so stay flexible.

Always back up your product photography

This is the holy rule for all photographers: when handling your photography, make sure to have a backup. This holiday photography tip is usually learned the hard way but you should be wise and avoid letting it happen to you. For example, imagine having the most amazing holiday photoshoot, and then your device decides to die, and you have to start everything from scratch. This is not something you want to experience, especially if you have a tight deadline.
